What a summer it has been for Dunsany based trainer Ger Lyons. The Meath man secured the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at The Curragh with Siskin earlier this month and followed that up with his first Ebor victory at York with 16/1 shot Mustajeer.
This 6-year old son of Medicean landed the most valuable handicap in Europe on Saturday in tremendous style and BoyleSports have introduced him at 16/1 for the Melbourne Cup.
Connections confirmed the Ebor was the first part of a plan involving the Australian feature race and Mustajeer will now head into quarantine with the Caufield Cup his next target in preparation for the Melbourne Cup.
The Australian Bloodstock syndicate have bought into the star performer and he will now be trained by Queensland based trainer Kris Lees ahead of his southern hemisphere journey. BoyleSports make Mustajeer the 14/1 joint favourite alongside Verry Ellegant, to win the Caufiled Cup in October. It’s 100/1 for the Ebor champion to win both the Caufield and Melbourne Cups this winter down under.
Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for BoyleSportstold The Bet: “Fellow Meath based trainer Tony Martin was the last Irish trainer to win the Ebor at the Knavesmire track with Heartbreak City in 2016 and now Ger Lyons has been added to the roll of honour with Mustajeer. It’s great to see that the plan they had for Mustajeer went according to plan with Australia the next destination for the star to conquer. We make him 16/1 favourite for the Melbourne Cup and 14/1 joint favourite for the Caufield Cup. It’s 100/1 for the Aussie double”.
